Dealers and Customers Building Trust with Vehicle History Reports, Carfax’s Larry Gamache Says

While vis­it­ing the Car­fax exhib­it at NADA 2015 in San Fran­cis­co, Lar­ry Gamache, Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Direc­tor, talked about what’s hap­pened since start­ing Car­fax Used Car List­ings and wel­com­ing more deal­ers to the Car­fax Advan­tage™ pro­gram over the past year. Dur­ing this time, mil­lions of con­sumers have found the car they want and avoid­ed the ones they don’t want by start­ing their used car search and view­ing vehi­cle his­to­ry reports at Carfax.com. A new nation­wide ad cam­paign from Car­fax will be show­ing just how sim­ple car shop­ping should be.

“Deal­ers build­ing trust is the chal­lenge – and that’s where Car­fax Used Car List­ings and Vehi­cle His­to­ry Reports come in,” Gamache said. US con­sumers appre­ci­ate dis­clo­sure – shar­ing infor­ma­tion hon­est­ly, Gamache said. They do this in how they make deci­sions on vot­ing and buy­ing – reward­ing those that are hon­est. Used car shop­pers appre­ci­ate deal­ers who are being hon­est on the vehicle’s con­di­tion, war­ran­ty pro­tec­tion, ser­vice his­to­ry, and any­thing else they need to know.

Hon­est report­ing goes both ways for the deal­er and the con­sumer in build­ing that trust and strong rela­tion­ship. It has a big impact on deal­ers buy­ing used vehi­cles at auc­tions and doing trade-ins at their lots – bring­ing them more con­fi­dence online and on lot. “The ques­tion for the deal­er might be: ‘Is there any­thing you want to tell me before I check the Car­fax report?’” Gamache said.

About 7,000 deal­ers have signed up for Car­fax Used Car List­ings, Gamache said. As part of changes recent­ly made on Carfax.com, more infor­ma­tion has been added on used vehi­cle pric­ing, more vehi­cle pho­tos are avail­able for view, and oth­er new fea­tures have been added.

Cer­ti­fied pre-owned vehi­cle sales con­tin­ue to increase. Gamache says that 37 automak­er brands now have CPO pro­grams, and that Car­fax has part­nered with all the automak­ers on their CPO pro­grams from the very begin­ning. “With CPO and oth­er used car sales, work­ing with Car­fax Reports helps deal­ers hit ‘the sweet spot’ – right in front of cus­tomers and answer all their ques­tions about any report­ed acci­dents and if the appro­pri­ate repair work was done,” Gamache said. “It curates the right per­son to the right car.”
