Apple’s CarPlay Brings iOS7 Features to Car Dashboards

Apple has a very cute way of describ­ing this new fea­ture: “Siri at the Wheel.”

CarPlay adds iOS7 fea­tures to dash­boards of select cars. That means it’s now eas­i­er and safer for iPhone own­ers to access mes­sages, maps, and media.

What CarPlay Does:

  • Is tool to bring key iOS7 fea­tures to dash­board of select cars
  • Apple has gained sup­port from a num­ber of OEMs
  • Promis­ing to deliv­er CarPlay-com­pat­i­ble vehi­cles lat­er this year

  • Fer­rari, Mer­cedes-Benz, and Vol­vo will be first to put CarPlay in vehi­cles
  • Cars will need touch-enabled info­tain­ment cen­ter, as well as Blue­tooth
  • iPhone own­ers will be able to use the car’s touch screen or Siri
  • Fea­tures are lim­it­ed to a small selec­tion: mes­sag­ing, map­ping, and music
  • Cal­i­for­nia dri­vers can now use smartphone’s map with­out fear of a tick­et
  • Dri­vers can access Siri via the voice con­trol but­ton on steer­ing wheel
  • Siri will access con­tacts to ini­ti­ate voice calls, return or answer calls
  • Siri will lis­ten to voice com­mands and read incom­ing mes­sages
