Negotiations for a free-trade agreement between the European Union and the US could push the global auto industry toward a world vehicle-regulatory system for the first time. Negotiators are looking at recognizing both regions’ standards in vehicle safety testing. If these negotiations move forward, cars tested in the US could be sold in the EU without additional safety testing and vice versa.
