Will Mandatory Auto Black Boxes Result in Loss of Privacy?

The Wall Street Journal - April 22, 2012

The Senate passed a bill in March calling for mandatory event data recorders to be installed in all new vehicles beginning with 2015 models to record data before, during, and after a crash. The bill includes a privacy provision but gives the government authority to access the “black box” in a number of circumstances that include court order, consent of the owner, an investigation or inspection, or to determine the need for emergency responses. Some fear more extensive loss of privacy related to event data recorders.
