Volk­swa­gen may be the largest automak­er in Europe and a pow­er­house in Chi­na, Brazil and much of the rest of the world. For years, it has flirt­ed with irrel­e­vance in the Unit­ed States. But now Volk­swa­gen, which has often declared its inten­tion to achieve the same stature in the Unit­ed States that it boasts else­where, is mount­ing its first seri­ous effort in decades to com­pete with the Japan­ese and Kore­an man­u­fac­tur­ers that have near­ly dri­ven it out of the U.S. mar­ket.
