As automakers cut the number of cars sold to rental fleets, the car rental companies are looking for ways to preserve their margins. To make matters worse for the rental industry, gasoline prices are also adversely affecting the bottom line. The result is a squeeze on consumers: cars with more miles, fuel surcharges and less generous frequent renter programs.
