Southern CA Goes High Tech to Catch Polluting Vehicles


South­ern Cal­i­for­nia rolls out a high-tech plan to catch pol­lut­ing vehi­cles. Begin­ning in 2006, remote sen­sors and video cam­eras will scan streets for smoky clunk­ers.

Pro­gram will begin in Los Ange­les, Orange, River­side and San Bernardi­no coun­ties
Offend­ing dri­vers will be offered up to $500 free repairs to bring up to stan­dards
Or South Coast Dis­trict will offer own­ers $1K to scrap clunk­ers
Low-income own­ers could get up to $2K addi­tion­al aid to replace old­er cars
