The Auburn Hills automaker sold 142,041 vehicles last month; September also marked the 30th consecutive month that Chrysler has experienced year-over-year sales gains.
General Motors Co. said its September sales rose 1.5 percent to 210,245 vehicles, marking its best September since 2008.
Volkswagen of America Inc. reported its best September sales figures since 1972. The German automaker said its 36,663 sales were up 34.4 percent from the same month a year ago. Sales were fueled in part by the Passat and Tiguan, which both posted their best September ever with sales of 9,500 and 2,200 units, respectively.
Hyundai Motor Co. said its September sales were the best ever, up 15 percent compared to the same month last year.
Hyundai sold 60,025 vehicles. Sales of its Elantra compact car rose 27 percent.
