While two-stroke engines haven’t been on the U.S. passenger car market since the Saab Trabant went away in the late 1960s, they may come back soon and compete with diesels, hybrids, and electrics as automakers must meet increasing future mileage standards. Research and development projects are under way in the U.S. and Europe.
