While two-stroke engines haven’t been on the U.S. pas­sen­ger car mar­ket since the Saab Tra­bant went away in the late 1960s, they may come back soon and com­pete with diesels, hybrids, and electrics as automak­ers must meet increas­ing future mileage stan­dards. Research and devel­op­ment projects are under way in the U.S. and Europe.
