Since Novem­ber 2007, Amer­i­cans have dri­ven 53.2 bil­lion miles less than the same peri­od a year ear­li­er and used 400 mil­lion gal­lons less of gas and 318 mil­lion gal­lons less of diesel fuel. The drop in fuel usage has U.S. Trans­porta­tion Sec­re­tary Mary Peters wor­ry­ing over con­tin­u­ing to use fuel tax­es to fund the U.S. trans­porta­tion net­work.
